Specialized gynecological care for our younger patients
As specialists in adolescent gynecology, we understand the needs and worries of our youngest patients and provide care as they begin to transition into adulthood. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a young person’s first visit to the gynecologist should occur between the ages of 13 and 15 years. Rest assured, during these early visits, an internal pelvic exam is usually not necessary unless the patient indicates symptoms of a gynecological problem.
The purpose of this visit is to educate the young patient about reproductive health and development. Puberty is often a confusing time and everyone’s experience with puberty is different. Establishing what is considered “normal”, or discovering issues early, will help put everyone at ease. Patients are encouraged to ask questions, and with very few exceptions, your conversation with your doctor is 100% confidential.
A pelvic exam will be given once a young person turns 18, becomes sexually active, or if there’s a medical concern. The exam is not painful and is done thoroughly, quickly and as comfortably as possible.
